A good place to start your sightseeing in Huancayo is along the Calle Real, which is lined with shops and similar attractions, and was officially known as the 'Calle de los Incas' in the late 15th century and today serves as the city's many thoroughfare.

The area surrounding Huancayo lends itself to all kinds of different recreational activities and seasonal outdoor attractions, ranging from jungle hiking to horseback riding through the Andes. Tourists will find a trip to the somewhat elevated Cerrito de la Libertad is simply a must, for the views on top of this hill are nothing short of spectacular.

Mountain bikers are able to enjoy day-long tours, while those who prefer a more leisurely cycle ride often join the combined biking and camping tours, which can last for anything between two and 12 days. Andean mountain trekking to the Huaytapallana lake and glacier is for those tourists with plenty of stamina and a good level of fitness, and this expedition usually takes around three days, being organised by Incas del Peru.

Located on the north-eastern side of the city and along the Avenida Giraldez, the Cerro de la Libertad has become a very notable recreational attraction for both locals and tourists alike. Apart from the views, you can also expect to find restaurants, art stalls, a small zoo, a pretty chapel and even a play area for children. From the Cerro de la Libertad, the Torre Torre formations are just 2 km / 1.5 miles away.

There are a number of prominent public parklands spread all around the city of Huancayo, offering important open and recreational spaces. On the north-easterly side of the city and within the suburb of San Antonio, the popular Parque de la Identidad Huanca (Parque de la Identidad Wanka) is completely constructed of stone, with unusual artistic designs, miniature buildings, statues and further attractions providing an intriguing insight into the Huanca (Wanka) culture. Other appealing parks include the centrally located Parque Huamanmarca, which marks the spot where the city was founded in 1572, and also the Parque de la Constitucion, which was formerly known as the 'Plaza Pardo' until being renamed to its present title in 1813.

The very scenic landscape of Quebrada Honda is to be found on the outskirts of Huancayo, where it provides a contrasting, rural location. Tourists tend to come to Quebrada Honda to escape the city crowds and experience its staggeringly beautiful natural scenery, which includes a number of small villages and also the actual Mantaro Valley.

The High Train remains especially famous in Peru and offers a truly spectacular way to travel between Lima and Huancayo, passing many extremely scenic and wonderful attractions en route and lasting roughly 12 hours. Often referred to as the 'Highest Train in the World', due to the incredibly high altitudes reached around the Peruvian Andes, those onboard the train will be able to experience the meandering Rio Rimac, the Infiernillo Bridge, the lengthy Ticlio Tunnel, the mining town of La Oroya, the Cerro de Pasco mines, and also the Rio Mantaro. Ferrocarril Central Andino tourist trains offer round-trips, including accommodation.
