Much of the shopping in Huancayo is based around its two main markets, which are both lively and very enticing. Those shopping for traditional Peruvian souvenirs to remember their time in Huancayo will find plenty available in these markets and also in the extensive selection of central shops, particularly along the Calle Real.

These include grocery stores, jewellers, galleries, boutiques, and outlets for local handicrafts, such as the art-related Casa del Artesano on the southerly corner of the Plaza de la Constitucion. Near to Huancayo, many further shopping opportunities present themselves, particularly in the westerly city of Lima. However, closer to hand are the villages of Cochas Chico and also Cochas Grande, both of which are famous for their beautifully carved 'story' gourds (mates burilados).

The Mercado Mayorista is a very popular market in Huancayo and offers almost everything that you could ever need when it comes to shopping. This covered market is open daily and is spread along the railway tracks. Plenty of Andean delicacies are available at the Mercado Mayorista, such as dried frogs and fresh guinea pigs. On the western side of Huancayo city centre and off the Huancavelica, the Feria Dominical is a weekly craft market, held each Sunday. Located to the north-west of the Piura, the shopping scene at the Feria Dominical is extensive and includes the wares from many neighbouring villages around the Rio Mantaro Valley, such as embroideries and various wood carvings.
